The sign proposal includes the airport logo or wording of “property of Kenai Municipal Airport”. City council members expressed opposition to the wording citing “cause for confusion. Councilmember Henry Knackstedt: “An attractive sign will bring attention to the field from thehighway, and shows that the field is a cooperative effort between the Airport and City of Kenai.” Lawton Acres, known as the Field of Flowers, was obtained by the City for the Airport from the FAA in 1964. An ongoing debate over the field of flowers started back in 1982, and has continued to be a topic of debate at City Council meetings over what should be done with Lawton Acres. The proposed sign would be 4’x8’ with printing on both sides, and is to be installed on 4×4 posts facing the Kenai Spur Highway near the electrical guy pole, roughly 100’ from the curb. The cost of the sign will be responsibility of the Kenai Municipal Airport. The design has now gone through the City of Kenai Beautification Committee for approval and will now go back to the council for final approval at their meeting on Wednesday, November 7.
