Cuba outlasts Japan in Grand Prix

first_img GET THE BEST OF THE JAPAN TIMES Cuba came back to defeat Japan in full sets at the Women’s World Grand Prix on Sunday, improving to a 3-0 record while handing the Pool A host its first loss. Cuba won 20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13, led by 21 points from Daimi Ramirez and 18 from Yumillka Ruiz in the preliminary round at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum. Megumi Kurihara scored 21 points and Yuki Shoji had a 20-point effort for Japan, which fell to 2-1. Late in the third set, Japan scored two consecutive points to tie the score once at 11-11 and again at 13-13, but Cuba outlasted Japan in a bid for its first World Grand Prix title in seven years.
